Glan-Thompson polarizers consist of two cemented prisms made from the highest optical grade calcite. Unpolarized light enters the polarizer, then is split at the intersection of the two crystals allowing s-polarized (e-ray) light to continue and p-polarized light (o-ray) to be reflected.
Glan-Taylor Polarizers produce extremely pure linear polarization with an extinction ratio greater than 100,000:1 and are meant for use with laser beams in the 350 nm – 2.3 μm wavelength range. A significant amount of reflected light escapes the polarizers through the side port, including all of the ordinary ray and some of the extraordinary ray. As such, the escape beam is not fully polarized, and only the transmitted extraordinary ray should be used for applications that require a high-quality, polarized beam.
A calcite Beam Displacer splits the input unpolarized beam of light into two orthogonally polarized components which exit parallel to each other. The ordinary polarization transmits straight through while the extraordinary transmits through the crystal making approximately 6 degree angle with the straight through beam and emerges parallel to it.
